Who is Robert Card?
The certified weapons instructor who spent two weeks in a mental health facility during the summer has been named as the person of interest in the mass shooting in Maine that left at least 22 people dead.
A manhunt was underway for 40-year-old Robert Card in relation to the Lewiston atrocity that occurred on Wednesday night.
Card is thought to be an Army Reserve member stationed out of Saco and is from Bowdoin, Maine, a hamlet with little over 3,000 residents.
The forty-year-old battled mental health problems; most recently, he claimed to have heard voices and made threats to blow up the military training facility. He spent two weeks in a mental health centre over the summer.
Card reportedly lost his job recently as well.
Reiterating that Card is merely a person of interest, the authorities would not yet label him a suspect.
In a statement released on Wednesday night, the Lewiston Police Department asked anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to get in touch with the agency.
‘Law Enforcement is attempting to locate Robert Card 4/4/1983, as a person of interest regarding the mass shooting at Schemengees Bar and Sparetime Recre.”
His most recent vehicle of choice appeared to be a white Subaru Outback with a black bumper. The car had been found, according to a statement issued by the Maine State Police.
‘A vehicle of interest was located in Lisbon and we are now also asking residents in Lisbon to shelter in place as law enforcement works in that area to locate Card,’ it read.
The manhunt expanded Wednesday night as hundreds of police officers from local and multiple federal agencies surrounded Lisbon and the nearby Lisbon Falls.
Police intervention in shootings
On Wednesday night, Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant and a bowling alley both had active gunfire incidents that required the response of Lewiston Police.
A Walmart spokeswoman told CNN that none of the company’s facilities were engaged in the incident, despite reports of a second gunshot at a Walmart distribution centre.
A bearded man wearing a brown sweatshirt and brandishing an AR-15-style rifle was captured on camera inside Sparetime Recreation.
Hospitals in Maine declared a mass casualty incident after twenty-two people died and more than sixty were injured.
A post from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms’ Boston office stated that law enforcement personnel were dispatched from neighbouring states, including Massachusetts.
State police urged citizens to cooperate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which also extended support to Maine authorities.
