Madonna on Lady Gaga: I do love her. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.
Here’s Madonna performing in Toronto on 9/12, and please don’t ask me why she continues to insist upon flaunting her butt cheeks on a regular basis. I don’t know why she does so, but it’s impossible to ignore said butt cheeks even when they’re not even relevant to today’s conversation, which is Madonna’s ongoing feud with Lady Gaga. As Kaiser pointed out in the past, Gaga is obviously copying Madonna in many ways because Madge (like it or not) is still relevant. Of course, Gaga’s response was about how Madge is so very old school (“25 years ago“) and that there’s nothing wrong with Gaga copying something that happened so long ago simply because Gaga’s the first person who did so in 25 years. That line of thought didn’t make much sense to me, but whatever.
Anyway, Madonna is still incredibly relevant in the world of pop music, and it doesn’t really matter that her last record bombed because audiences are clearly willing to pay $300 to see her in concert. After all, artists have rarely made money off album sales alone, and everyone knows that the real dough comes from touring. While onstage this past weekend, Madonna took it upon herself to publiclty forgive Gaga for copying her. Does Lourdes’ opinion have anything to do with Madge’s sudden change of heart? Probably not. Madonna was just paying lip service to Gaga in the simplest way possible, and her clichéd choice of words reflects that intention. Oh, and she’s supposedly forgiven Elton John for calling her a fairground stripper too:

Madonna has recently been trying to put an end to her ongoing feuds with Elton John and Lady Gaga.
Last month, the 54-year-old MDNA singer dedicated her song “Masterpiece” to John, 65, during a concert in Nice, France. She said she “forgives him” for calling her a “fairground stripper” and saying her career is over. At her concert in Atlantic City on Saturday, Madonna dedicated the same song to Gaga, 26, and said she’d like to collaborate with her.
“You wanna know something? I love her,” she told the crowd. “I love her. I do love her. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.”
“One day, very soon, we’re going to be on stage together. Just you wait,” she added. “You think I’m kidding? I love Lady Gaga.”
During an interview with Newsweek in January 2012, Madonna slammed Gaga’s single “Born This Way” for its similarities to her 1989 song “Express Yourself.” “I thought, this is a wonderful way to redo my song,” she told the mag. “I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was . . . interesting.”
In April 2012, NME asked Gaga if she noticed her song was a knockoff of Madonna’s hit. “What a completely ridiculous thing to even question me about . . . If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression,” Gaga argued. “It’s the same one that’s been in disco music for the last 50 years. Just because I’m the first f—ing artist in 25 years to think of putting it on Top 40 radio, it doesn’t mean I’m a plagiarist, it means that I’m f—ing smart. Sorry.”

So what’s with the sudden change of heart from Madonna? I doubt it really means anything at all. Madge would obviously love to have Gaga as a “guest” onstage because that would mean Madge was in charge. I don’t think she’s ever going to formally “pass the torch” Gaga’s way because — and this will irritate the Little Monsters out there — Gaga really is a flash in the pan compared to Madge. Sure, Gaga has enjoyed a great deal of commercial success with just a few albums, but she’s yet to achieve any sort of longevity and has to resort to dressing like an exhausting freak just to stay semi-relevant. Conversely, Madge is an institution. She’s a gristle-bound narcissist who insists upon ridiculously wearing a cheerleading uniform after the age of 50, but she’s an institution nonetheless.
Incidentally, Lady Gaga was just onstage in Amsterdam last night and toked up onstage. Is this controversial? Nah. Marijuana is perfectly legal in that country, and Gaga probably indulges all the time anyway.
